About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Keelung is a compact port city in northern Taiwan, sitting right on the coast near the capital. It’s best known for its deep-water harbor, busy container port, and excellent access to Taipei by train or bus.

Many visitors pass through Keelung on their way to Taiwan’s north coast or outlying islands, but the city rewards those who stay. Miaokou Night Market is the main draw, filling the evening streets with the scent of seafood, sizzling snacks, and sweet treats.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Eat your way through Miaokou Night Market — Sample stinky tofu, oyster omelet, pot‑edged pancake soup, and bubble ice. Leave room for a “nutritious sandwich” loaded with frybread, mayo, and sausage.
  • Try fresh seafood on Heping Island — This coastal spot offers a more relaxed dining scene with island‑style eats away from the downtown crowds.
  • Walk the downtown harbor area — The compact city center is easily covered on foot, letting you soak up the working‑port atmosphere and pop into street‑food stalls as you go.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Take the right train — Only board TRA trains clearly marked for Keelung; east‑coast trains branch off at Badu and will take you far off course.
  • Use the direct bus for speed — Kuo‑Kuang buses from Taipei Main Station’s East‑West terminal reach Keelung Harbor in about 35 minutes; buy a ticket or tap an EasyCard on and off.
  • Check ferry schedules in advance — Passenger routes to Japan, Xiamen, and Matsu can be suspended or infrequent, so verify current timetables before planning sea travel.
