About this place
Kayseri is a sprawling industrial city in Central Anatolia, home to roughly 1.2 million residents and a major university. Its roots reach back to Roman times and the city takes its name from Caesar Augustus, but the strongest architectural legacy was left by the Seljuks in the 12th and 13th centuries. Today, visitors encounter a working Turkish city where historic stone mosques and a dark basalt citadel sit beside modern boulevards, trams, and busy bazaars.
Because Kayseri Province borders the tourist heartland of Cappadocia, many travelers pass through without stopping. Those who linger find a genuine cultural experience centered on Seljuk monuments, a lively covered market, and distinctive local flavors like pastırma. The dormant volcano Mount Erciyes rises just south of town and offers winter skiing alongside summer mountain access.

Things to Do
- Ski or hike on Mount Erciyes — a dormant volcano reaching 3,917 meters just 15 km south of the city. Winter brings skiing (expect queues at peak times) while summer lifts provide access to mountain trails.
- Catch a Kayserispor football match at Kadir Has Stadium, northwest of the center, where the local side competes in the Turkish second tier.
- Explore the Kayseri Kapalı Çarşı — the covered bazaar southwest of the castle is worth wandering for its atmosphere, even if you are not planning to buy.
- Taste pastırma — the city's signature dried, spiced beef dish, served as a starter, in mains, or stuffed into börek.
- Sample local gilaburu juice — an acidic, intensely red fruit drink traditionally used as a palate cleanser (small quantities recommended).

- Kayseri Castle walls — stout black basalt fortifications lining the streets around the historic core, marking the former castle perimeter.
- Ulu Camii (Great Mosque) — a 13th-century mosque adjacent to the bazaar area, southwest of the castle.
- Çifte Medrese (Twin Seminaries) — two adjoining 12th-century religious complexes facing the castle, one of which served as a hospital and contains a decorated tomb.
- The Central Clocktower — standing at the busy crossroads just north of the castle, a useful landmark for navigating the old center.
- Atatürk House Museum — the mansion where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed in Kayseri, now a free museum open six days a week.
- Virgin Mary Church (Meryem Ana Kilisesi) — a 19th-century church building that has been repurposed over time and now operates as a free-entry public library.

- High summer (July–August) brings the highest temperatures, occasionally reaching nearly 39.7°C — plan indoor or morning activities during the hottest part of the day.

Planning Tips
- Buy a Kart38 smart card from a ticket kiosk for discounted tram and bus travel around the city.
- The T1, T2, and T3 tram lines link residential districts, the central spine, and major transport hubs — check municipal timetables online.
- If visiting Mount Erciyes in ski season, expect limited lift capacity and crowded slopes; a weekday trip may be more enjoyable.
- Pastırma and handwoven carpets are popular local purchases, but remember that meat products are typically prohibited from casual international import.
- Long-distance buses and trains connect Kayseri with Ankara, Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the east — book tickets via operators like Metro Turizm, Flixbus, or TCDD.
- Ongoing infrastructure projects mean the bus station and high-speed train stop will eventually relocate roughly 10 km north of the city center; check current station locations before travel.
- Bring patience if you plan to ride the Erciyes ski lifts on winter weekends, as queue lengths frequently exceed run length.
