About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Kawasaki sits in Kanagawa Prefecture, wedged between two of Japan’s largest cities — Tokyo to the north and Yokohama to the south. Though often overlooked by travelers zipping between its famous neighbors, this city of over 1.5 million people has quietly cultivated a handful of attractions that make it a worthy day trip or overnight stop. Its history as a trading post on the old Tokaido road echoes through a handful of temples and shrines, while its modern incarnation mixes working industrial zones with sleek, redeveloped city-center pockets.

Geographically, Kawasaki stretches from the Tama River — which marks its border with Tokyo — west toward the rolling Tama Hills, with Tokyo Bay lapping its eastern edge. That varied topography means visitors can wander gritty-but-photogenic factory islands one afternoon and explore leafy temple grounds the next, all within a single compact city.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Time your visit for the Kanamara Matsuri (Iron Penis Festival) on the first Sunday in April, when elaborate phallus-shaped o-mikoshi are paraded through the streets, candy popsicles in eye-catching shapes sell out by midday, and a festive, anything-goes atmosphere takes over.
  • Ride what’s billed as the World’s Shortest Escalator in the basement of the More’s shopping complex near Kawasaki station — the five-step, 8-second trip sits inexplicably between two flights of stairs and has spawned local tales about its origin.
  • Photograph the Kawasaki Industrial Zone at night: a network of man-made islands threaded with canals, bridges, pipes, and smokestacks that light up in dramatic fashion. Print a map beforehand, as many access roads dead-end short of the islands.
  • Join the competition-like energy of the summer fireworks display near Futako-Tamagawa station, where Tokyo and Kanagawa prefectures launch alternating volleys, creating a playful one-upmanship across the river on a single evening near summer’s end.
  • Catch a race at the city’s horse racing track next to Keikyu Daishi Line Minatomachi station or watch keirin bicycle racing a short walk from the main Kawasaki train stations.

Things to See

  • Visit one of Japan’s three most-visited temples during the New Year period — a major Buddhist temple whose spacious grounds draw enormous crowds for hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year).
  • Explore a Shinto fertility shrine famous not only for its spring festival but also for a small on-site sex museum, where Japanese erotic art, a life-sized brass model, and a playful reinterpretation of the Three Monkeys await; the attendant will usually unlock it on request.
  • Browse the amulet selection at Wakamiya Hachiman shrine — talismans for fertility, protection from disease, and sexual prowess are sold for ¥500–1000, with a portion of proceeds supporting HIV/AIDS research.

  • For festival-goers, plan around the first Sunday in April to catch the Kanamara Matsuri — arrive early morning before the penis-shaped candies and vagina popsicles sell out.
  • Late May through early June offers a favorable mix of comfortable warmth and relatively manageable rainfall, with average lows around 9.3°C and highs reaching 29.3°C.
  • Summer evenings deliver the fireworks near Futako-Tamagawa station; check local schedules for the exact date, typically near the end of summer.
  • New Year draws massive crowds to the temples, especially one of Japan’s busiest for hatsumode, so book accommodation well ahead if visiting around the turn of the year.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Use Kawasaki station as a budget-friendly sleep base for Tokyo and Yokohama — the JR Keihin-Tohoku, Tokaido, and Keikyu lines provide frequent, quick connections to both cities.
  • If arriving at Haneda Airport, the Keikyu Line Express whisks you to Keikyu-Kawasaki in 15–20 minutes for ¥400; make sure the train’s destination is Shin-Zushi or Kanazawa-Bunko to avoid a transfer at Keikyu-Kamata.
  • From Narita Airport, the JR Narita Express to Shinagawa, then transfer to the Tokaido Line (about 90 minutes, ¥3280), is faster and simpler than using commuter trains, and is covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
  • Print or download an aerial map before exploring the industrial zone at night — many roads end abruptly before reaching the islands, and a visual guide will save you from dead-end frustration.
  • Visit the sex museum at the shrine during the day and simply ask the shop attendant to open it; official hours are erratic but staff are usually accommodating, and entry is by donation.
  • Car rental is unnecessary — the surprisingly charming Keikyu Daishi Line putters through backyards and gets you to the main temple in three stops from Keikyu Kawasaki for just ¥230.
