About this place
Kavala is a compact coastal city in Macedonia that pairs a lively, working port with a beautifully preserved old hilltop quarter. It was founded by Thasians in the 7th century BC and grew wealthy through trade, gold from Mount Pangaion, and later tobacco processing. Today the blend of Byzantine walls, an Ottoman aqueduct, and a landmark Islamic poorhouse turned luxury hotel tells its long story without feeling like a museum.
The city works well for visitors who want a genuine Greek urban base rather than a purpose-built resort. Most holidaymakers use Kavala as a gateway to the beaches of Palio, Nea Iraklitsa, and Nea Peramos, or the ferry to Thassos, but the old lanes, harbourfront cafés, and easy access to archaeological sites reward a stay of several days.

Things to Do
- Swim and sunbathe along the coast — the swimming season runs from early May to mid-October, with the driest, sunniest days from mid-June through late August.
- Explore the mountain villages — head inland for tavernas serving real Greek specialities that haven't been adapted to tourist tastes; the restaurant in Koryfes (Oreino) is a noted base for this.
- Day-trip to Thassos — the island is a short ferry ride from Kavala and is considered one of the greenest and most beautiful islands in Greece.
- Visit summer beach bars and events — Palio, Iraklitsa, and Nea Peramos host musical events and beach parties during high season.

Best Time to Visit
- Mid-May to mid-June — the swimming season has begun, temperatures are mild, and the crowds of high summer have yet to arrive.
- September to mid-October — sea temperatures remain pleasant, summer heat subsides, and the city returns to a calmer rhythm after the August peak.
- Mid-June to late August — ideal for reliable sun and almost no rain, though this is the hottest period and coincides with the busiest tourist weeks along the coast.

Planning Tips
- Agree on taxi fares upfront — from the airport, expect around €35 to the city; on the street, rides within town should cost no more than €5. Verify the driver is using the correct meter rate.
- Use intercity coaches for regional travel — KTEL buses are the most convenient way to reach Thessaloniki (about €15, 2–2½ hours) and Athens, with frequent daily departures.
- Try local specialties — Kavala is known for kourampiedes (butter-almond biscuits) and wines from the Pangaion Hills region, both worth seeking out.
- Dine away from the port for better value — the street leading up to Panagia and the fishing harbour of Sfagia at the east end of town offer more consistent quality at fairer prices.
