About this place
Kashgar sits at the far western edge of China in Xinjiang, where the northern and southern Silk Road routes once converged. Today it remains a bustling trading hub, often called home to the largest bazaar in Asia, and is widely regarded as the main center of Uyghur culture in China. Its population is a vibrant mix of Uyghurs, Han Chinese, Kyrgyz, Tajiks, and Uzbeks, lending the city a distinctly Central Asian feel.
Historically an independent kingdom, a Mongol holding, and an outpost of various empires, Kashgar is now China's westernmost city. It also serves as the northern terminus of the Karakorum Highway, the dramatic mountain road linking China with Pakistan.

Planning Tips
- Prepare for border permits — Traveling onward to Tashkurgan or beyond requires a Border Area Pass; apply early at the Foreign Affairs Office.
- Carry a good map — Paper maps from Reise Know-How or Gizi Map are helpful, as digital mapping can be unreliable and local maps are often only in Chinese.
- Watch for quiet traffic — Electric motorbikes are common and nearly silent; stay alert when crossing streets or walking near dedicated bike lanes.
- Hone your bargaining skills — From carpets to melons, nearly everything in the bazaar is negotiable; start low and stay friendly.
