About this place
Karawang is a substantial satellite city about 50 km east of Jakarta in the North Coast region of Western Java. It's a major industrial hub, home to many factories — particularly for Japanese companies — yet the wider regency includes extensive rural landscapes, smaller towns like Cikampek and Rengasdengklok, and the archaeological site of Batujaya. With a population of around 308,000, it blends a working-city pace with access to deeper Javanese history and countryside.

Things to See
- Rawagede Monument (Balongsari) — About 8 km north of the city, the village of Balongsari (formerly Rawagede) commemorates a 1947 massacre during the Indonesian War of Independence. The site stands as a sobering historical landmark, recognised internationally and subject to a 2011 Dutch court ruling on state responsibility.

- Drier months overall — While Karawang's tropical climate means humidity and rain are always possible, the mid-year stretch sees the best balance of sunshine and manageable cloud cover for travel.

Planning Tips
- Plan around the toll road — The Tol Jakarta-Cikampek is the primary artery linking Karawang to Jakarta and points east; anticipate potential traffic, especially near the capital.
- Use local minivans for short hops — Angkot routes radiate from Terminal Klari and the Johar area to key districts; they are the backbone of intra-city travel for short distances.
- Try local specialties at roadside carts — Look for dodong hideung ketan, a traditional black sticky rice dish with coconut milk, typically sold from street carts.
- Check train schedules carefully — Train service connects West and East Karawang stations with Jakarta and eastern towns, but departures are limited to a few economy-class trains daily.
