About this place
Karaj sits in the foothills of the Alborz Mountains, about 20 km west of Tehran, and serves as the capital of Alborz Province. Often called "Little Iran" because of its diverse population drawn from across the country, the city blends a modern, industrial edge with surprising access to mountain scenery and historic sites.
The surrounding peaks shape much of the local character, providing a cooler climate than Tehran and opening the door to outdoor recreation. While many visitors pass through on their way to the Caspian Sea via the famous Chalus Road, Karaj rewards those who linger with hiking trails, ski resorts, and a string of natural and cultural attractions just beyond the urban center.
