About this place
Kano is the largest city in northern Nigeria and the capital of Kano State, with a population of around 3.6 million (2016 estimate). As an ancient trading city inhabited for well over a thousand years, it offers a busy, energetic atmosphere. While the international airport sees little tourist trade, the city rewards visitors with a rich history, vibrant street life, and genuinely welcoming locals.
The city is predominantly Muslim, with a small Christian and traditional-religion minority. Shari'a law was introduced around 2001, but it applies only to Muslims and punishments are rarely enforced. English is the official language, though Hausa is the language of the streets. Practical challenges include frequent electricity brownouts, and streets aren't always pristine.

Things to Do
- Climb the old Dala Hill (also called Goron Dutse) in the city center for a 360-degree view of the ancient city — it's where Kano began and now houses an underground water reservoir.
- Watch a Kano Pillars FC match at Sani Abacha Stadium or the indoor stadium in Sabon Gari. Tickets can be as low as US$5, and the fan atmosphere is electric.
- Visit Marhaba Cinema, a state-owned movie theater just behind the Immigration office and the Farm Centre electronics market.
- Explore the bustling street stalls that line major roads from dusk until about 2:00 AM, offering everything from local snacks to everyday goods.

Things to See
- The dye pits of Kano — over 500 years old and still privately operated. Indigo is mixed with potassium and ash, fermented for a month, then used to dye cloths that once adorned Nigerian royalty. Short tours are available, and you can purchase tie-dyed fabrics and garments.
- Kantin Kwari Market and Kofar Wambai Market — two of the city's most famous formal markets, ideal for daytime shopping and experiencing local commerce.
- Sabon Gari neighborhood — known for its bars, nightclubs, and stores where alcoholic drinks are freely available (alcohol is otherwise hard to find under Shari'a law).

Planning Tips
- Apply for a visa at least four weeks before departure from the relevant Nigerian embassy or high commission; you'll need proof of financial support and possibly an employer letter.
- Get vaccinations for yellow fever and cholera, and prepare malaria medication before traveling.
- Use yellow-and-blue taxis or motorbikes for getting around — always agree on a price before starting your journey.
- Most hotels require upfront payment (typically 125% of the room rate) — ask for a receipt.
- Avoid using internet banking on anything but private computers, and keep valuables in zipped pockets in crowded areas.
- Do not drink locally made beverages (such as zobo or kunun aya) unless you are confident about their source and hygiene.
- Carry Nigerian naira — foreign currency is not generally accepted in shops or markets.
