About this place
Kandahar, the capital of Kandahar province, is the largest city in Southern Afghanistan and the country's second-largest after Kabul. It served as the first capital of modern Afghanistan in the 18th century and remains a major economic and political hub. The city sits at roughly 1,005 m (3,297 feet) above sea level, nourished by the Arghandab and Tarnak rivers that create lush green surroundings. Its residents are predominantly Pashtuns, alongside smaller communities of Tajiks, Hazaras, and others.
Today, Kandahar is slowly developing, with a large international airport and road connections to Kabul, Herat, and Quetta in Pakistan. Agriculture and trade drive the local economy, and the city is a significant exporter of fresh and dried fruits. Visitors will find a growing number of restaurants, modern banking services, and sports venues, all set against a backdrop of deep historical significance.

Planning Tips
- Highway travel requires caution — the Kabul–Kandahar A01 highway is busy, and routes toward Herat can be risky; check current conditions before driving.
- Carry Afghanis in cash for all purchases; branches of several banks and Western Union services are available in the city for currency needs.
- Dress and behave conservatively to blend with locals and avoid unnecessary attention, which enhances personal safety.
- Arrange a driver when renting a vehicle, or secure proper insurance if driving yourself — taxis are also readily available for getting around the city.
- Verify accommodation options in advance, as detailed listings for hotels are sparse and quality varies.
