About this place

Last updated Aug 22, 2026

Kalemie is a lakeside town on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Founded in the 1890s as a Belgian military base, it remains a working port city with a low-key, off-the-beaten-path character. With a population of around 160,000, Kalemie serves as a transit point for lake traffic and a gateway for travelers drawn to one of Africa’s Great Lakes. The town itself is compact and easy to navigate, though tourism infrastructure is minimal and most visitors pass through en route to other destinations on the lake.

Planning Tips

  • Fly if possible — flights from Kinshasa or Lubumbashi with FlyCAA operate a few times per week and are the most reliable way to reach Kalemie.
  • Expect transport delays — whether traveling by rail, road, or boat, build flexibility into your itinerary and avoid tight connections.
  • Pack for basic conditions — bring essential supplies, cash, and any specialized gear you may need, as shopping options in Kalemie are limited.
  • Plan around the dry season — schedule travel between July and October for the best chance of passable roads and favorable lake conditions.
