About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Kakamega is a city of around 100,000 inhabitants in the Nyanza province of Western Kenya. It serves as the capital of the region and a common starting point for trips to the nearby Kakamega Rainforest — Kenya's only tropical rainforest and the last remnant of the vast Congolese rainforest ecosystem. The city itself has a distinctive character, divided by Muliro Garden: the eastern side offers quiet parklands and villas, while the western side is a lively hub of shops, markets, and small workshops.

Once the site of a 1930s gold rush, Kakamega today is shaped by agriculture (particularly sugarcane and maize) and its growing reputation as a gateway to the forest. The town also has a tradition of bullfights in nearby Malinya. While classic tourist attractions within the city are limited, visitors come for the authentic small-town African atmosphere and, above all, access to the unique rainforest.
