About this place
Kaili is the capital of the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in eastern Guizhou province. It is primarily an industrial hub, with a large coal-fired power station, cement factories, and considerable construction activity that can make the city feel dusty and rundown.
Despite its rough urban edges, Kaili serves as the main gateway to a scenic region known for its colorful Miao and Dong minority villages. Travelers typically use the city for a practical overnight stop or as a transit point before heading into the surrounding countryside.

Planning Tips
- Use Kaili as a base, not a destination — most travelers stay briefly before heading to villages like Xijiang, Lang De, or Leishan.
- Learn a few Chinese phrases — bus signs and route information are in Chinese, and English is not widely spoken.
- Minivans from Guiyang airport — walk right from the terminal exit to the minivan station; vans depart when full, so waits are possible.
- Train connections — Kaili lies on the Kunming–Changsha railway, with services from Guiyang, Kunming, and Changsha.
- High-speed rail route — from the Cheng Yang area, take the high-speed train to Sanjiang South, then transfer via Duyun to reach Kaili by bus.
