About this place
Kaifeng is a city layered with over 4,100 years of history, resting on the southern bank of the Yellow River in eastern Henan Province. Once the capital of several powerful dynasties, including the Song, it was believed to be the largest and most prosperous city in the world during the 11th century. This deep past has left a unique imprint; the city's central axis has never changed, with each era’s version built directly upon the ruins of its predecessors.
Today, Kaifeng is a vibrant destination where historical prominence meets modern life. It is renowned in China as the setting for the classic handscroll painting, 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival.' The city's cultural fabric was enriched centuries ago by international residents, including Persians, Arabians, and a historic Jewish community, whose lasting presence contributed to the local Hui ethnic group.
