About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Kaesŏng is a historic city in North Korea, located just 8 mm from the DMZ with South Korea. It served as the capital of the Koryo Dynasty for several centuries, and its collection of twelve monuments and sites earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2013. The city reflects a deep cultural heritage, once sitting at the heart of Korean political and artistic life.

Travel here is tightly controlled and only possible as part of a government-escorted tour, usually originating from Pyongyang. The former Kaesong Industrial Complex, a joint economic zone with South Korea, has been largely abandoned as of 2024.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Book through an authorized tour — visits must be arranged as part of an escorted itinerary from Pyongyang; confirm current entry rules before booking.
  • Carry accepted currencies — shops catering to visitors accept US dollars, euros, and Chinese yuan for souvenirs and ginseng.
  • Plan logistics around the DMZ — the location just 8 mm from the border makes it practical to combine a Kaesŏng tour with a DMZ visit, provided conditions allow.
