About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Kabwe, the capital of Central Province in Zambia, is a city of deep contrasts shaped by its mining history. Once known as Broken Hill during the colonial era, it played a notable role in the country's independence movement. Today, the city offers a raw, unfiltered look at everyday Zambian life, far from the polished tourist circuits of Lusaka.

Visitors will find a place that is exceptionally laid-back and authentic, though its infrastructure has visibly deteriorated over the decades. Beyond the historical significance, the main draws are the rugged landscapes of the old mine and the chance to experience genuine local culture away from typical tourist environments.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Hike at Broken Hill — Head to the far south end of town, east of the railway tracks, to explore the namesake hill. Climb up to the deep former mine-shaft lakes for solitude in a scenic, rugged setting.
  • Experience local bar culture — Visit the Zhose-a-zhose area on Ghana Avenue for a cheap night out. Several bars, a grill, and a lively mix of Zambian and American hip-hop make it a popular evening hangout.
  • Explore the local market — South of Independence Avenue, the market is the place to buy fresh food and practice your bargaining skills, which is a normal and expected part of daily commerce.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • The Broken Hill landmark — A naturally formed hill just south of town with a shaft through it, which gave the city its colonial name and was the site of the major lead and zinc mine that defined the local economy.
  • Everyday Zambian town life — Kabwe’s main sight is its authentic, unfiltered rhythm. Walking the dirt roads and seeing the mix of bicycles, pedestrians, and minibuses offers a genuine window into a working Zambian city.
  • Remnants of the mining era — Even in their post-industrial state, the area around the old mine and the deep lakes that filled the shafts provide a striking visual reminder of the city’s past.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Getting there by bus — Luxury buses like Mazhandu connect Kabwe north to the Copperbelt and south to Lusaka. The main boarding area is on the street in front of Big Bite, and journeys often feature lively, lengthy sermons from preachers on board.
  • Getting around locally — Blue-and-white minibuses are a good value and can be hailed anywhere, but they stop only at the driver's discretion. Driving your own car requires slow, careful navigation on the many unpaved roads, always keeping a big distance from the erratic minibuses.
  • Eating and drinking — For fast food, Hungry Lion on Independence Avenue is a reliable spot. For a more local experience, freshly grilled sausages outside compound bars are the city's best food. Bars by law close at 10:30 PM; after that, nightclubs are the only public option.
  • Health precautions — Given the city's status as one of the world's most polluted areas with lead contamination in soil and water, it is wise to take strict precautions. Research current health and safety recommendations regarding water consumption and exposure.
