About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Juliaca is a bustling high-altitude city of about 276,000 people on Peru's windswept Collao Plateau. Sitting at 3825°C above sea level and just 45 km northwest of Lake Titicaca, it is the financial and trade capital of the Puno region. The city is known as the "Windy City" for its exposed location, and as the "Sock City" for its history as a major center of textile and handicraft production.

Travelers often pass through Juliaca en route to Lake Titicaca or Cusco, and while the city itself is not a primary tourist hub, it offers a glimpse of authentic Altiplano commerce and hosts vibrant annual festivals.
