About this place
Juazeiro sits on the right bank of the Rio São Francisco (affectionately called Velho Chico) in the Bahia Interior. Home to around 220,000 people, the city grew up at a historic crossroads and still feels connected to the river that shaped it.
Travelers come for the lively riverfront bars, a museum dedicated to the São Francisco, and an events calendar packed with religious festivals, accordion music, and agricultural fairs. It’s also a practical base for visiting waterfalls in the surrounding caatinga landscape.

Things to Do
- Salitre waterfall — A short waterfall with a jump of just over 2 meters, excellent for bathing and a favorite with local kids. It's located about 39 km from Juazeiro, accessed via BA-210 toward Sobradinho.
- Gameleira waterfall — A more adventurous option 68 km from the city. Hidden in the caatinga, this 5-meter waterfall flows through a canyon and is shaded by a giant gameleira tree. The deep pool allows for jumps from the top.
- Event-hopping — July is an especially busy month, featuring the city’s anniversary celebrations, the International Fair of Irrigated Agriculture (FENAGRI), and the International Accordion Festival. September brings the Civic-Military Parade on the 7th and the feast of the city’s patron saint, Nossa Senhora das Grotas, on the 8th.

Best Time to Visit
- Late July through September — This period offers the most comfortable weather of the year, with very little rain and partly cloudy skies, making it ideal for waterfall trips and outdoor events like FENAGRI and the Accordion Festival.
- Festival months — If you want to experience local culture at its most vibrant, plan around July (city anniversary, FENAGRI, Accordion Festival) or September (Civic Parade and the city's patron saint day on the 8th).
- Carnival (February/March) — For travelers looking for a big celebration, Carnival brings energy to the streets at the tail end of the rainy season.

Planning Tips
- Getting there — The city is reachable by bus from Salvador, Fortaleza, São Paulo, and Brasília via companies like Expresso Guanabara and Viação Itapemirim. The nearest commercial airport is in Petrolina, about 15 km away.
- Waterfall logistics — The Salitre and Gameleira waterfalls are 39 km and 68 km from town, respectively, and require a trip on BA-210. Plan for a half-day or full-day excursion, and expect bumpier roads as you get closer.
- Event timing — If your visit doesn’t line up with the big July festivals, September still offers the city’s patron saint celebrations on the 8th and the folklore week in August.
