About this place

Last updated Jun 14, 2026

Jos is the capital of Plateau State in North Central Nigeria, a city of over a million people set on a scenic plateau. Historically one of the country's earliest colonial-era settlements, it has long been a crossroads of cultures. The city is home to indigenous groups such as the Afizere, Berom, and Anaguta, alongside many others from across Nigeria, creating a linguistically rich environment where Hausa and English are widely spoken.

Known for its cool climate and dramatic rocky landscapes, Jos was once a celebrated tourist destination. While some of its older attractions and infrastructure show their age, newer areas like Rayfield offer a more modern feel. Visitors today find a city with deep cultural roots, lively markets, and a backdrop of abandoned tin mines turned into lakes.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Shared transport over private rides — using shared taxis, tricycles, or minibuses is generally safer than hiring a private vehicle or motorcycle taxi, even if less comfortable.
  • Language basics — while English is widely understood, knowing a few Hausa phrases can be helpful; Berom and Izere are also common in surrounding districts.
  • Medical facilities — the Jos University Teaching Hospital in Lamingo offers comprehensive care; consider locating it and other clinics when planning your stay.
  • Guide for outlying sites — when visiting the old tin-mine lakes and waterfalls on the city outskirts, arrange a local guide for safer and more informed trips.
  • Prepare for checkpoints — overland routes into Jos can involve frequent security inspections; patience and identification documents are essential.
