About this place
Jinghong, the capital of Xishuangbanna in southern Yunnan, feels worlds apart from much of China. With a predominantly Theravada Buddhist population and a language related to Thai and Lao, the city exudes a Southeast Asian atmosphere that attracts both Chinese package tourists and international backpackers. It serves as a major gateway for overland travel between China and Laos.
The city is compact and walkable in its interesting central parts, though buses, taxis, and electric car rentals make wider exploration easy. The riverside area along the Mekong comes alive at night with bars and views worth a stroll, even if you don't stop for a drink.
