About this place
Jinan (济南 Jǐnán), the provincial capital of Shandong in North China, is a city known for its rich history and abundant natural springs. Nicknamed the "City of Springs" (泉城 quánchéng), Jinan features numerous artesian wells that bubble up within the city limits, flowing north toward the iconic Daming Lake and onward to the Yellow River. While it may not always be on the typical tourist itinerary, Jinan offers enough attractions to warrant a couple of days' stay. It also serves as a perfect base for exploring the region, including Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, and Mount Tai, one of the sacred Five Great Mountains of Taoism.
The area around Jinan has been inhabited for over 4,000 years, with Neolithic-era finds from the Longshan culture. It became an important economic and cultural hub during the Han Dynasty (202 BCE–220 CE). The city's development accelerated in the modern era when the Yellow River shifted course in 1852, and later when a German-built railway connecting Jinan and Qingdao opened in 1904, opening up the city to foreign trade.
Jinan has four well-defined seasons: a dry spring, hot and wet summer, crisp autumn, and dry, cold winter with little snow. With a population of about 9.2 million (2020), it is a sprawling, modern city that blends ancient cultural sites with contemporary shopping and dining districts.

Planning Tips
- Getting around: Use the Jinan Metro (3 lines as of 2023) for fast, reliable travel between major railway stations and the east/west parts of the city. Buses cost ¥1–¥2 but are more challenging for non-Chinese speakers.
- Language: Have your destination written in Chinese to show taxi drivers, as they typically do not speak English and may not read pinyin maps.
- Identification: Carry your passport when visiting museums and cultural sites, as some require ID for free entry.
- Connectivity: The Great Firewall blocks many international websites (Google, Facebook, YouTube, Wikipedia). Consider installing a reliable VPN service before your trip.
- Food: For non-Chinese speakers, look for canteens, food halls, and restaurants in shopping centers or hotels for easier ordering. Local specialties include soup-based dishes, seafood, maize, peanuts, and flatbreads.
- Safety: Jinan is very safe, but be mindful of pickpocketing on public transport and in crowded areas. Keep luggage in sight at transport hubs like Jinan Train Station.
- Day trips: Use Jinan as a base to visit Qufu (Confucius's hometown) and Mount Tai via high-speed rail or bus.
