About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Jimma is a lively city in Western Ethiopia with deep roots as a historic market hub. For generations, traders from across Ethiopia and neighboring kingdoms gathered here to exchange coffee, perfume, and other goods, giving the city a vibrant, multicultural character that persists today.

Modern Jimma, home to roughly 207,000 people, blends its Oromo kingdom heritage with the influences of Islam, Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, and Protestantism. Amharic and Afan Oromo are widely spoken, and visitors can still glimpse the city’s regal past at remnants like the Aba Jifar Palace.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Market day timing — plan to be in town on a Thursday to experience Jimma’s busiest market day, which is the best opportunity to buy baskets and local crafts.
  • Getting around — use bajajs or shared line taxis to move within the city; agree on fares in advance where prices aren’t fixed.
  • Rainy-season prep — if traveling between mid-March and mid-October, pack a good rain jacket and plan for overcast skies, even though it stays warm.
  • Cultural context — learning a few greetings in Amharic or Afan Oromo can go a long way, given the city’s bilingual character.
