About this place
Jilin (吉林 Jílín) is one of the most beautiful cities in Manchuria, offering a far more pleasant and manageable experience than many other cities in Northeast China (Dongbei). Bisected by the Songhua River (known as the Sungari River in Manchu, meaning "white river"), the city's riverfront is its biggest draw. Originally a Qing Dynasty fortress and shipbuilding hub, Jilin has grown into a modern industrial city with a population of 1.3 million.
For many travelers, Jilin serves as a convenient staging point for trips to the nearby Changbaishan National Nature Reserve. Wander the largely rebuilt hutongs clustered between the river and railway tracks, where you can discover small temples, mosques, and local snacks. The city takes on a special charm in winter, when the river's frozen mists create spectacular rime ice landscapes along its banks.

Planning Tips
- Getting in — Fly into Changchun Longjia International Airport and take the high-speed train (30 min, ¥24) or coach (¥20–30) to Jilin. A taxi from the airport costs around ¥200.
- Getting around — City buses charge only ¥1 (keep small change) and are efficient, though taxis are honest and metered with a ¥5 start fee. Avoid taxis waiting outside the train station, as they may not use the meter.
- Local shopping — Jilin is known for ginseng, pilose antler, marten fur, kirigami paper cutting, and painted calabash. The "Three Northeast Treasures" (ginseng, marten, pilose antler) are popular souvenirs.
- Weather preparation — If visiting in winter, pack warm layers, a heavy coat, gloves, and a hat. In summer, light clothing and rain gear are advisable.
- Train connections — High-speed D trains connect Jilin to major cities like Beijing (7 hr), Changchun (45 min), Harbin (2.5 hr), and Shenyang (2.5 hr). Book tickets in advance during holidays.
- Base for Changbaishan — Many travelers use Jilin as a starting point for trips to Changbaishan National Nature Reserve. Allow at least 2–3 days for the round trip to the reserve.
