About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Jijiga has served as the capital of the Somali region since 1995. Situated in eastern Ethiopia, it stands as one of the few areas in the region under full government control. The city offers travelers a glimpse into Somali culture and a landscape of dry, semi-arid valleys.

The journey from Harar is often considered the real highlight — the road winds through valleys dotted with large boulders and stones. Jijiga itself is a modest city with dozens of mosques and a lively market scene, best explored on foot.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Drive from Harar — the 2–2.5 hour road trip traverses striking semi-arid valleys, passing large boulders and a glimpse of regional refugee settlements.
  • Explore the markets — walk through the shops and stalls leading to the historic Fooq Dheere building for a real sense of local commerce.
  • Look for camel caravans — with a bit of luck, you might spot a genuine camel caravan making its way through the city or outskirts.
  • Sample Somali cuisine — modern cafes and restaurants serve authentic Somali food; Maamuus Café in the Ethiopian Airlines shopping center is a handy spot for coffee and pizza.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Arrange transport from Harar — regular minibuses depart from the Harar station for the 2–2.5 hour trip.
  • Set realistic expectations — Jijiga is not a typical sightseeing destination; its appeal lies in the journey, the markets, and everyday Somali culture.
  • Check permissions ahead — if you have a specific interest in the Jeel Ogaden Prison Museum, understand that entry for foreigners is highly restricted and likely not possible without government clearance.
