About this place
Jiayuguan sits at a dramatic pinch-point in western Gansu, long known as the 'mouth of China' for its role guarding the Ming Dynasty frontier. The city marks the western terminus of the Great Wall, where the narrow Hexi Corridor funnels between desert and mountains — a historic choke-point that gave the passage its nickname 'the throat of China'.
Today, Jiayuguan serves as a regional hub with solid train connections across the northwest. The compact urban center offers an accessible base for exploring the fortress and wall sections, with most sights reachable by inexpensive city buses or short taxi rides.

Planning Tips
- Buy the combined ticket — the ¥110 pass covers the fort, Xuanbi Wall, and the First Pier; student discounts may be available.
- Use bus 4 to the fort — a direct, ¥1 ride from the train station and city center, taking about 20 minutes.
- Negotiate taxi day-hire upfront — drivers near the stations might overcharge; asking a few operators helps gauge fair pricing.
- Prepare for wind and sun — sunscreen, a hat, and a windbreaker will serve you well even on clear days.
- Allow time for the South station — high-speed trains depart from a newer area southeast of town; budget a bit more for the taxi transfer than trips to the older central station.
