About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Jiaxing is a historic city in Zhejiang province, strategically located less than an hour by train from Shanghai. With more than 2,000 years of history, it evolved from a fortified town into a prosperous market hub on the Grand Canal, attracting emperors, scholars, and artists. Today, its urban area is home to around 1.5 million people, blending a walkable old city with modern development.

The city's centerpiece is South Lake, a scenic spot long favored by day-trippers and once the backdrop for the founding of the Communist Party of China. Beyond the lake, Jiaxing is the gateway to two of China's most famous preserved canal towns: Wuzhen, with its dense network of waterways and traditional houses, and Xitang, a rural township crisscrossed by atmospheric lanes and stone bridges.
