About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Jeju City is the largest urban center on Jeju Island and the primary gateway for visitors, home to the international airport and the main domestic ferry terminal. The city stretches along the northern coast, wedged between the slopes of Mt. Halla and the sea, and serves as both the administrative capital of Jeju Province and a practical base for exploring the island.

The city is split into distinct areas: the old downtown of Jungangno with its traditional markets, the port district of Tapdong, and the modern high-rise commercial hub of Shin-Jeju to the southwest. Major highways fan out from Shin-Jeju toward the island’s western half, making it easy to launch day trips to coastal, interior, or alpine destinations.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Explore the Jungangno traditional markets — huge, bustling markets in the old downtown offer incredible seafood and local specialties; the underground mall on the main road provides modern shopping.
  • Shop for Jeju specialties in Shin-Jeju — department stores like Lotte and E-Mart anchor the new commercial quarter, alongside souvenir shops selling basalt grandfather statues and persimmon-dyed clothing.
  • Taste Jeju black pork — grilled pork from the island's black-haired pigs is a celebrated local dish and a highlight of any food crawl.
  • Sample Jeju citrus and hallabong — fresh mandarines and the distinctive hallabong (a sweet, easy-to-peel fruit) are essential flavors of the island.
  • Attend the Jeju Tangerine Festival — held since 1981, this event celebrates the island's citrus heritage and draws both locals and visitors.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Yongduam Rock (Yongdam) — a coastal rock formation on the north side of the city, lending its name to the surrounding Yongdam district; the name is romanized inconsistently but it's a unique landmark.
  • Tapdong port district — the harbor area north of Jungangno offers seaside views and a glimpse of Jeju's maritime character, with easy access from central bus routes.
  • Halla Arboretum — accessible via city buses 63 and 300, this green space provides a peaceful introduction to Jeju's flora.

  • Late April to mid-June — mild temperatures (average 18.5°C, highs to 27.2°C), low rainfall (3.5 mm), and pleasant sunshine make this an ideal window for sightseeing.
  • Mid-September to early November — comfortable autumn weather with averages around 19.8°C, moderate cloud cover (51.1%), and minimal precipitation (3.2 mm).
  • Avoid July and August — these months bring peak tourist season, higher humidity, and summer heat, which can make exploring the city and island less comfortable.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Get a transit card — buses cost around ₩1,000 per ride; cards from other South Korean cities work, or you can buy one at a convenience store.
  • Consider walking in the city center — Jungangno, Tapdong, Yongdam, and the bus terminal are all within roughly 2 km, so walking is often faster and simpler than navigating buses.
  • Budget accommodation is plentiful — affordable motels near the inter-city bus terminal and jjimjilbangs (Korean saunas) offer stays under ₩10,000–₩30,000 per night.
  • Look for lightweight souvenirs — if flying with strict weight limits, seek out basalt grandfather statues with natural cavities (vugs) that make them surprisingly light.
  • Shop at the Jeju Folk Arts Complex — prices for traditional art and crafts here are lower than at many other island shops.
