About this place
Jaunpur is a historic city in eastern Uttar Pradesh’s Purvanchal region. Founded by Feroz Shah Tughlaq and later the seat of the independent Sharqi Sultanate (1394–1479), the city preserves a remarkable collection of medieval mosques, tombs, a bridge, and a fort. The Sharqi-era mosques exhibit a distinctive architectural style — with towering ornamental gateways, intricate geometric and floral patterns, and fine calligraphy — rarely found elsewhere on the subcontinent.
While not a mainstream tourist destination, Jaunpur appeals to history enthusiasts willing to explore independently. The town has hotels and eateries, though tourist infrastructure such as trained guides is limited.
