Planning Tips
- Book onward travel in advance — Overnight bus and train tickets between Colombo and Jaffna can be booked online, with the journey taking around 7-8 hours. Services arrive very early in the morning.
- Secure your own transport — For getting around the spread-out district, renting a scooter or hiring a private minivan for the day is the most flexible and recommended option.
- Do not drink the tap water — Stick to bottled water. For a local drink, try fresh palmyrah toddy or Nelli cordial from the ubiquitous fresh juice stalls.
- Check festival dates — The Nallur festival and Thai Pongal are the highlights of the calendar. Verify exact dates before booking as they change annually.
- Stay safe on the beaches — Beware of jellyfish that wash up at dawn and never swim beyond the floating styrofoam markers. When in very remote areas, be aware that old landmines may still exist.
