About this place
Jacobabad is a city in northern Sindh, Pakistan, founded during the British colonial era and named for Brigadier-General John Jacob. He oversaw the transformation of surrounding desert into fertile farmland through the excavation of the Begaree Canal. Today it is a regional centre with a population of around 220,000.
The city is known primarily for its extreme summer climate, frequently ranking among the hottest inhabited places on Earth. Most visitors pass through briefly by rail, as Jacobabad lies on the train line between Karachi and Quetta.
