About this place
The Far South is São Paulo's largest and least densely populated region, a sprawling expanse where forests, farmland, and the massive Guarapiranga and Billings reservoirs dominate the landscape. It offers a side of the city unavailable elsewhere: nautical sports, ecotourism in preserved rainforest, and cultural sites like a Messianic temple. While much of the region is a working-class area with pockets of affluence, its districts of Parelheiros and Marsilac—known as the Amazônia Paulistana—hold some of the municipality's most significant remaining nature.
The region's development history is tied to 20th-century water infrastructure and rapid suburban growth. Today, efforts to turn reservoir shores into public parks are creating new leisure options, while environmental protections now cover large swaths of the southern rainforests, attracting attention from ecotourism operators.

- Guarapiranga and Billings reservoirs — these vast water bodies define the landscape and are gradually being ringed with public parks, balancing water supply with recreation.
- Serra do Mar vistas — from higher points in Marsilac, you can catch views all the way to the ocean atop the Serra do Mar escarpment.

Best Time to Visit
- April to mid-May — pleasant temperatures and lighter rainfall make this an optimal window for hiking, water sports, and exploring unpaved roads comfortably.
- Winter dry season (June–August) — cooler but typically drier, good for trekking and outdoor activities without heavy summer downpours.
- Avoid summer rain peaks (December–February) — heavy rainfall can make unpaved roads impassable and swell reservoir shores, complicating ecotourism and driving.

Planning Tips
- Rent or use a prepared car — a vehicle is the best way to reach widespread reservoir clubs and trailheads; choose one suitable for unpaved roads if heading to Parelheiros or Marsilac.
- Consider a guided ecotourism tour — several agencies run trips from central São Paulo, handling transport, safety, and access to areas that can be tricky to navigate independently.
- Research access for water sports — nautical activities on Guarapiranga typically operate via private clubs, so confirm guest access or day passes in advance.
- Stay aware of your surroundings — if visiting less affluent districts, local guidance goes a long way; stick to established parks, club areas, and guided excursions.
