About this place
Iztapalapa is the most populous borough in Mexico City, located in the eastern part of the metropolis. With a history stretching back centuries to a time before the Spanish arrival, it was originally a Nahua agrarian community of chinampas and canals connected to Xochimilco. The 20th century brought heavy urbanization, and today it is a densely populated, working-class area.
For the adventurous and curious traveler, Iztapalapa offers unique cultural attractions not found elsewhere in the city, most notably its world-famous Passion Play performed during Semana Santa. However, visitors should be aware that it is also a rough-and-tumble neighborhood with challenges including poverty and higher rates of crime, requiring extra diligence when exploring.

Planning Tips
- Use the Metro to get to most sites of interest; stations like Constitucion de 1917 (Line 8) and Santa Marta (Line A) serve the Cablebus terminals.
- For getting around, Uber is a safer choice than hailing local taxis. If using taxis, only use official sitios (regulated taxi stands).
- Stay safe: Do not wander far from crowds or into nearby neighborhoods. Stick to well-trafficked tourist sites and avoid exploring unfamiliar areas on a whim.
- Drink only bottled or filtered water; avoid tap water, especially in Iztapalapa where quality is notably poor.
- Book accommodations in more central, tourist-friendly neighborhoods of Mexico City and commute into Iztapalapa for day trips.
