About this place
İzmit is a large industrial city in Turkey's Eastern Marmara region, situated at the head of the long, narrow Gulf of İzmit on the Sea of Marmara. It serves as the capital of Kocaeli province and is a major link on the busy transport corridor between Istanbul and Ankara. While its economy is driven by industry and commerce, the city center offers a compact historic core centered around a leafy plaza and a landmark clock tower.
The city was rebuilt following a devastating earthquake in 1999, which destroyed much of its Ottoman heritage. Today, İzmit is primarily a destination for business travel, but visitors passing through will find pleasant esplanade strolls, a handful of traditional lanes and historic mosques, and a surprising local pub street.

Things to Do
- Beach and esplanade — The waterfront promenade is decent for a walk, though the water is not suitable for swimming. For a beach, the stony shore at Başiskele on the south side of the gulf is the best local option.
- Football — Catch a match with Kocaelispor, who play in the top-tier Süper Lig at the 34,700-capacity Kocaeli Stadyumu, located 5 km east of the city center.
- Local pub street — Explore a surprising collection of pubs and bars clustered in an alley off Cumhuriyet Cd, just east of the clock tower.

Things to See
- Clock Tower — The elegant neoclassical Saat Kulesi, built in 1901, stands 16.4 m tall in the main plaza near the railway station, surrounded by fountains and parkland.
- Traditional Ottoman houses — An alley winding up from the clock tower features preserved or restored wooden homes, including the Selim Sirri Pasha Mansion.
- Fevziye Mosque — First built in the early 1500s and completely destroyed in the 1999 earthquake, this mosque on Cumhuriyet Cd is now a faithful modern replica.
- Ottoman film set — A collection of mock-up Ottoman-era buildings is used regularly as a film and TV set, offering a unique chance to see period-costumed extras at work.

Planning Tips
- Getting in — YHT fast trains connect İzmit with Ankara, Konya, and Istanbul's Asian-side stations. Frequent buses also run from Istanbul and Ankara.
- Driving — Use the O-4/E80 toll motorway instead of the congested coastal D100 highway for a much faster journey from Istanbul.
- Getting around — The historic area is walkable, but you will need a dolmuş, taxi, or the Akçaray tram line to reach the bus station or sprawling suburbs.
- Local specialty — Try pişmaniye, a fine-stranded sweet made of flour and butter, likened to cotton candy.
- Accommodation location — Budget hotels cluster along D100 on the south edge of town; pricier business hotels are found further east along D605.
