About this place
Iwo is a historic city in Osun State, set on a low hill where savanna meets forest. Founded in the 16th or 17th century, it was once the capital of a Yoruba kingdom and today remains a major township in southwestern Nigeria. Roads and rail link it to Ibadan, Oyo, and Ogbomosho, and cacao cultivation drives much of the local economy.
Home to over thirty traditional rulers under the Oluwo of Iwoland, Iwo blends deep cultural heritage with a youthful energy shaped by its many higher institutions — including Bowen University. The city also holds the distinction of hosting Nigeria's first state television station, launched in the 1980s.
