About this place
Iwaki is a regional city in Fukushima Prefecture where mountains meet the Pacific Ocean. Nicknamed "Sunshine Iwaki," it enjoys notably sunny and temperate weather compared to much of Japan. The city was formed in 1966 through the merger of several towns, uniting areas such as Taira, Yumoto, and the port of Onahama under a single name written in hiragana. Today, Iwaki balances a strong industrial base with a growing tourism sector, drawing millions of visitors each year to its coastal and hot-spring attractions. Its economy is anchored by manufacturing and agriculture, making it the top industrial producer in the Tōhoku region.
