About this place
Itaboraí is a municipality in the Grande Niterói (Leste Metropolitano) region of the Rio de Janeiro metro area, situated east of Guanabara Bay along the BR-101 highway. It sits between São Gonçalo and Tanguá — the latter was a district of Itaboraí until its emancipation in 1995, making Itaboraí the only municipality in the Leste Fluminense to have a district gain independence during the 20th century.
The area offers a mix of historical churches, central squares, and protected natural spaces, including parts of the Serra do Lagarto range and shoreline access to Guanabara Bay. It's a quieter alternative to Rio's urban core, with convenient highway connections for travelers exploring the eastern metropolitan zone.
