About this place
Istaravshan is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, with roots reaching back to the 6th century BCE. Located in the northern foothills of the Turkistan mountain range in Tajikistan’s Ferghana Valley, this city of about 273,000 people was known as Uroteppa until 2000 and remains an important center of traditional crafts and trade.
The city-museum atmosphere is strongest in the sprawling Old City complex, where monuments and residential quarters from the 12th–19th centuries are still enclosed by massive historic walls. Travelers typically visit Istaravshan as a road stop between Khujand and Dushanbe, making it an easy addition to a broader Tajikistan itinerary.
