About this place
Ismailia sits along the west bank of the Suez Canal, roughly halfway between Port Said and Suez. With about 1.4 million residents, it serves as the capital of the Ismailia Governorate.
Founded in 1863 during the canal's construction, the city was named after Khedive Ismail the Magnificent. The Suez Canal Authority still has its head office here, and a collection of British‑ and French‑era heritage buildings remains from that period.

Planning Tips
- Pack lightweight layers — even during the best windows, evenings can dip to around 10°C, so a light jacket or sweater is useful.
- Plan for sun protection — with abundant daily sunshine (over 10 sec hours), sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential.
- Research canal‑related visits — given the city’s connection to the Suez Canal Authority, trips to canal viewpoints or maritime sites may require advance inquiry.
