About this place
Irvine is a meticulously planned city of about 308,000 people in Orange County, California. Developed largely by the Irvine Company starting in the 1960s and incorporated in 1971, it has grown into a major business hub while maintaining a spacious, suburban character. The city is also home to the University of California, Irvine, one of the largest UC campuses.
Wide arterial streets connect distinct residential villages and commercial districts, with many national and international companies based near the freeways and John Wayne Airport. Though spread out and car-centric, Irvine offers an unusually extensive network of bike trails that wind through greenbelts and wildlife corridors.

Planning Tips
- Rent a car or bring a GPS — The city's winding streets and spread-out layout make driving essential; a navigation system will save you from getting lost in residential tracts.
- Know where to find fuel — Gas stations are deliberately hidden from main roads; look for them tucked inside larger shopping plazas and plan fill-ups ahead of time.
- Use toll road 73 from San Diego — To bypass heavy traffic on Interstate 5 when driving northbound, consider taking State Route 73, a toll road that splits off in Laguna Niguel.
- Leverage the bike network — If you prefer two wheels, Irvine's extensive trails and lanes offer a legitimate way to explore, with buses and trains accommodating bicycles for longer hops.
- Heed the DUI enforcement — The Irvine Police Department stakes out bar areas at closing time; use a designated driver or rideshare if you plan to drink.
