Iringa is a lively district capital in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands, perched on a cliff at a cool 1,600 m overlooking the Little Ruaha River valley. It serves as the main gateway to Ruaha National Park and other safari parks on the southern circuit, making it a key stop for travelers heading to Malawi, Zambia, or Dar es Salaam.
Beyond its role as a transport hub, Iringa rewards visitors who linger. Away from the busy main street, the town has an attractive bluff-top setting, a healthy highland climate, and a genuine, bustling atmosphere. - Learn Swahili — Take a course at the respected Iringa Swahili School, located at Rivervalley Campsite. Many NGOs and missionary organizations use this program, and it’s considered one of the best in Tanzania.
- Play golf with local flair — Tee off at the Mkwawa Golf Course, known for its brown greens, talkative caddies, and a green-keeping team of donkeys and goats that adds a uniquely memorable twist.
- Visit Amani Orphanage — Learn about community responses to the AIDS pandemic in the hard-hit Iringa region. The orphanage in Mbigili, 25 km from town, offers a traditional guesthouse, great food, and hiking opportunities.

- Gangilonga Rock — Walk through an upscale suburb to this “talking stone” for panoramic views over Iringa. Exercise caution, as reports mention potential safety concerns in the area.
- Neema Crafts Centre — Tour workshops where artisans create crafts, including paper made from elephant dung, then enjoy excellent cake and fresh coffee at the on-site café.
- Isimila Stone Age Site — About 15 km from town, this site holds one of the world’s largest collections of Acheulean tools, some up to 300,000 years old, plus striking sandstone pillars formed by erosion.
- Chief Mkwawa’s skull — In Kalenga, see the skull of the Hehe chief, famously returned by the Germans after many decades.

- Internet access — The fastest and most reliable internet is at Neema Crafts Centre, which also has WiFi in its restaurant. Other cafés may have slower speeds or virus risks.
- Getting around — Buses connect Iringa to Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Mbeya. The Dar road is being upgraded, and the journey passes through scenic landscapes and a national park.
- Layer up — Nights can be chilly at this elevation, even during warmer months, so bring a jacket or fleece regardless of the season.
