About this place
Irbid is a major city in northern Jordan, serving as the industrial and administrative hub of the region. Located about 88 km north of Amman, it is a lively university town, home to Yarmouk University and the Jordan University of Science and Technology, which give it a youthful, energetic atmosphere. While its ancient history as the Roman city of Arabella now lies beneath the modern streets, Irbid functions primarily as a practical and affordable base for exploring the region.
The city isn't a classic tourist sight in itself, but it offers an authentic slice of Jordanian daily life. Its main thoroughfare, University Street, is packed with shops, casual eateries, internet cafes, and coffee houses where locals gather. From here, travelers can easily launch day trips to remarkable nearby archaeological sites like Umm Qais (Gadara) and Pella.

Things to Do
- Stroll down University Street — the city's main artery, lined with shops, boutiques, restaurants, and a huge number of internet cafes that once earned Irbid a Guinness World Record.
- Experience local cafe culture — most coffee shops serve shisha (hookah), providing a relaxed, sociable atmosphere popular with the city's large student population.
- Embark on a day trip to Umm Qais — the ancient Decapolis city of Gadara offers impressive Greco-Roman ruins with stunning views over the Sea of Galilee, easily reachable from Irbid.
- Explore the ruins at Pella — another of the Decapolis cities, this archaeological site features remains from the Bronze Age through to the Islamic era, set in the Jordan Valley.

- Getting there from Amman — buses run from the Tabarbour Transport Terminal; basic buses cost from 1 JD, while more comfortable, direct Hijazi coaches are 2.10 JD.
- Getting around economically — local shared "service" taxis and buses are very cheap (no more than 0.20 JD), but you'll need to ask locals about the unmarked routes.
- Negotiate taxi fares upfront — standard yellow or beige cabs rarely use the meter; agree on a price in 0.5 JD increments before your journey begins.
- Manage your expectations for shopping — while University Street has many shops for clothing and jewelry, head to Amman for a wider range of international brands and souvenirs.
