About this place
Imperatriz is the second-largest city in Maranhão, serving as the key commercial and cultural hub linking the southwest of the state with northern Tocantins and southern Pará. Known as the "Gateway of the Amazon," it offers travelers a glimpse of Brazil beyond the well-trodden coastal routes and a base for exploring the state's southern ecological attractions. The city is also a center for mining, reflecting its role in the regional economy.
While not a traditional tourist city, Imperatriz provides a genuine taste of local life and cuisine. It is the primary starting point for adventures into the natural landscapes of the south and southwest of Maranhão, including access to the Chapada das Mesas and the cities of Carolina and Riachão.
