About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State in North Central Nigeria, is a city where diverse cultures meet. Home to roughly 950,000 people as of 2020, it is a historical confluence of Fulani, Yoruba, Hausa, Nupe, Bariba, and Kanuri communities. This blend is reflected in a strong Islamic influence alongside a growing Christian presence in its cosmopolitan areas, creating a unique atmosphere in the North Central region.

Functioning as a gateway between northern and southern Nigeria, Ilorin is a vibrant commercial and academic center. The modern city has grown around an ancient district of traditional red-dust homes and mosques, and today its economy is driven by agriculture, local handicrafts like pottery and weaving, and a developing industrial sector that includes sugar refining and food processing. The presence of the University of Ilorin and other institutions adds a significant student population to the city's fabric.
