About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Iligan sits on the northeastern coast of Northern Mindanao, ringed by more than 20 waterfalls that earn it the nickname City of Majestic Waterfalls. Its name likely comes from the Higaonon word for "fortress," and the city blends indigenous roots with a predominantly Cebuano-speaking, Christian population. The area lies outside the typhoon belt, enjoying a relatively sheltered tropical climate year-round.

The city serves as the industrial center of Mindanao, but visitors come for the natural beauty — limestone landscapes, cold springs, and rivers that have shaped local life for generations. Iligan is also home to a community of nationally acclaimed artists, poets, and cultural workers, adding a creative layer to its identity.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Fly into Laguindingan Airport — Multiple daily flights from Manila and Cebu via Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, and PAL Express; expect around 1 hour 20 minutes from Manila or 1 hour from Cebu. Super Five and Rural Transit buses connect the airport to Iligan.
  • Bring cash — ATMs at BDO, Metro Bank, and PNB accept overseas cards, but fees apply and withdrawal limits exist; not all establishments may accept cards.
  • Use jeepneys and taxis for city travel — Jeepneys are the most common public transport; taxis can be radio-dispatched, and habal-habal motorcycles reach outlying areas.
  • Pack for tropical humidity — Light clothing, swimwear for the spring pools and waterfalls, and sturdy shoes for hiking Mt. Agad-Agad or exploring caves.
  • Try local delicacies — Look for Cheding's Peanuts, Sukang Pinakurat, and Babuyap as edible souvenirs, plus bamboo crafts and ethnic products.
