About this place
Ica is a regional capital in Peru's southern coastal desert, set about an hour inland from the Pacific. The surrounding valley is kept green by irrigation, producing grapes for wine and Pisco brandy — the heart of Peruvian viticulture.
The city makes a practical base for Huacachina Lagoon, South America's only desert oasis, surrounded by towering sand dunes perfect for sandboarding. An outstanding archaeology museum, easy bus connections from Lima (4–5 hours) and Nazca (2–3 hours), and a relaxed local rhythm round out the draw.

Planning Tips
- Getting there — Buses from Lima take 4–5 hours; from Nazca it's about 2–3 hours (S/13 in 2023). Factor in extra time for bridge construction delays heading south.
- Nighttime transport — Use taxis after dark rather than walking, especially around the central hotel zone near the Plaza de Armas.
- Museum budget — Entrance to the Museo Regional costs S/10; bring cash for small purchases at the Mercado Modelo and local eateries.
- What to drink — Try a classic Pisco Sour at a local bar; straight Pisco is potent, while cachina offers a sweeter introduction.
