About this place
Ibarra is the capital of Imbabura province, a colonial city of about 100,000 people set halfway between Quito and the Colombian border. Its compact, picturesque center preserves much of its original architecture and offers a quieter alternative to the more tourist-heavy Otavalo, just a short bus ride away.
Founded in 1606, the city carries a long and colorful history — from Inca resistance in the early 1500s to a decisive independence battle led by Simón Bolívar. Rebuilt after devastating earthquakes in 1868, Ibarra calls itself the “youngest city in Ecuador,” and today its clean plazas and historic churches make it an easy, welcoming stop on the Panamerican highway.
