About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana in Southern India, is a sprawling metropolis where a 400-year-old history meets a modern IT boom. Known as the "City of Pearls" and "City of Nizams," the city's rich heritage is visible in its magnificent palaces, mosques, and bazaars, particularly in the historic Old City. At the same time, the gleaming glass facades of Cyberabad's tech parks tell the story of a modern economic powerhouse.

Founded in 1591 on the Deccan Plateau, Hyderabad was the seat of the powerful Nizams, whose opulent princely state was once the largest and most prosperous in India. This layered history has created a unique culture, blending North and South Indian traditions with strong Islamic and courtly influences. The city is also famous for its distinct cuisine, particularly the world-renowned Hyderabadi biryani.

Today's Hyderabad is a city of contrasts, with a modern urban core sitting between the historic Old City and the former British cantonment of Secunderabad. While the city is a major hub for Information Technology, its artificial lakes, parks, and world-class attractions like the Ramoji Film City offer a diverse experience for any traveler.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Choose your accommodation carefully — the city is sprawling, so stay near Old City for tourist sites, or near Banjara Hills/Hussain Sagar for a central location with better access to both old and new city areas.
  • Use the Hyderabad Metro for fast and efficient travel between major areas; it's often better than driving or taking a cab.
  • App-based ride-hailing services (Ola/Uber) are widely available and recommended for point-to-point travel, but be prepared for surge pricing during peak hours.
  • Auto-rickshaws are common but rarely use meters; negotiate the fare before starting your journey.
  • Dress modestly when visiting the conservative Old City, home to many major monuments.
