About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Hyderabad is the second-largest city in Sindh province and the 8th largest in Pakistan, with a population of roughly 1.9 million. Situated along the River Indus, the city has long been a crossroads of culture and commerce, serving as the capital of Sindh for many centuries. Its early origins trace back to a small fishing village called Neroon Kot before being founded in its present form in 1768 by the Kalhora ruler Mian Ghulam Shah Kalhoro. The city flourished under subsequent Talpur rule and later became part of British India before joining Pakistan after independence in 1947.

Today, Hyderabad is an important commercial and cultural center and a transit hub between rural and urban Sindh. Visitors can explore the tombs of Kalhora and Talpur rulers, two royal fortresses, and the colorful, lively Shahi Bazaar that stretches for miles. The city is also a major global producer of bangles, adding a vibrant shopping dimension to any trip.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Arrange airport or station transfers in advance through your hotel — taxis are not easily hailed on the street.
  • Foreign travelers should book accommodation near Autobahn Rd, where guesthouses readily accept international guests.
  • Travel between Karachi and Hyderabad is easiest via the M-9 motorway, about a two-hour drive.
  • If coming from Lahore or northern Punjab, the Karakoram Express offers air-conditioned comfort and a faster journey with limited stops.
  • Carry cash (Pakistani rupees) as many smaller vendors and rickshaw drivers may not accept cards.
