About this place
Hurghada has transformed from a modest fishing village into a major Red Sea resort town, drawing budget-conscious travelers from Europe and Russia. It now boasts over 100 hotels along the shoreline and connects easily to Luxor and other Nile Valley highlights for combined beach-and-history holidays.
The main strip runs from the more traditional, Egyptian-feeling north through Sigala, the lively downtown with restaurants, hotels, and dive operators, then continues south past the old Sheraton into the newer resort zone. The coral reefs sit several miles offshore, so diving and snorkeling require boat trips.

Planning Tips
- Agree taxi fares upfront — negotiate the total price (not per person) before entering; have small notes ready.
- Use Uber or Careem for short city trips — apps reduce haggling, but may be limited at airports, bus stations, and outside central areas.
- Book boat trips independently — walk-in dive centers and operators often charge less than hotel desks for the same two-dive excursions.
- Allow extra time for airport logistics — SIM card registration, visa-on-arrival queues, and finding a ride to town can take time after landing.
