About this place

Last updated Jul 20, 2026

Huntsville, located in northern Alabama near the Tennessee border, has transformed from a quiet cotton town into a major center for aerospace and missile defense. The city's modern identity was shaped when Dr. Werner von Braun and his team of German rocket scientists arrived in 1950, leading to the establishment of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Today, Cummings Research Park — the second largest research park in the country — hosts major operations for companies like Boeing and Northrop Grumman.

The city offers a mix of historical and outdoor attractions. Downtown's Big Spring International Park surrounds the spring where the city was founded, while the Twickenham Historic District features homes dating back to 1814. The nearby Flint River offers canoeing opportunities, and the Huntsville Botanical Garden hosts a popular holiday lights show. Huntsville proper is now the largest city in Alabama, with the metro area including Madison, Athens, and Decatur.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 20, 2026
  • Stay hydrated in summer — temperatures can hit triple digits with high humidity; carry adequate water during outdoor activities like hiking on Monte Sano.
  • Rent a car if possible — with limited public transit and a car-oriented layout, having your own vehicle makes getting around much easier.
  • Check tornado forecasts in spring and late fall — be aware that tornado warnings are common during these seasons and can affect outdoor plans.
  • Book accommodations near your interests — downtown places you near Big Spring Park and historic districts; South Huntsville is closer to greenways and nature trails.
