About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Huizhou (惠州) is a mid-sized city in Guangdong Province that often surprises first-time visitors. Nestled in lush, tropical countryside about 40 miles north of Shenzhen, it was a sleepy Pearl River Delta town until the 1980s, when it grew rapidly into an industrial hub attracting investment from Japan, Korea, Europe, and the United States. Despite its modern industry, Huizhou retains a pleasant, architecturally appealing character and is considered one of the most attractive mid-sized cities in Guangdong.

With a population of nearly 3 million, Huizhou offers a mix of commercial energy and natural scenery. Its location in the subtropical zone gives it a warm climate year-round, and the city is well connected to nearby Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong by highway and rail, making it a convenient base for exploring the broader Pearl River Delta.
